Associate Provost Okianer Christian Dark, along with the co-Directors of the Summer Academy Dr. Rubin Patterson, Chair, Department of Sociology and Criminology and Dr. Elka Stevens, Interim Co-Chair, Department of Art, develop and manage the curriculum for the Summer Academy, which is now in its third year. The Summer Academy includes a four-day off campus retreat, several brown bag sessions, an intense two-day research retreat, and multiple opportunities for junior and senior faculty to collaborate on their writing and creative pursuits.

The key to the Summer Academy are the Scholar Coaches who are the mentors. Each Faculty Scholar (junior faculty member) is assigned a Scholar Coach who works with him or her on their summer project. An important outcome for the Summer Academy is that the Faculty Scholars develop relationships with peer and more senior colleagues who can provide a network of support as their careers progress at the University. The Junior Faculty Writing and Creative Works Summer Academy is funded by the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation and the Office of the Provost. More information about the Summer Academy can be found on the Office of Faculty Development’s Web site at https://www2.howard.edu/provost/faculty-development/opportunities.
